City Lab Aims to Turn Hilliard into Tech Playground

Dozens of 3D printers whirr away inside what look like oversize telephone booths at a warehouse in Hilliard, a stone’s throw from the I-270 outer belt. Spools of recycled plastic filament — the machines’ input — are scattered around beside finished products: outdoor furniture, a tree grille, a giant letter “E” that will become part of a sign.

The business, IC3D, is one of eight companies inside a space run by Converge Technologies and the city of Hilliard, which aims to incubate tech startups. Other businesses in the space are developing drones, tracking devices, radar systems, thermoplastic components, software and more. Located at 4621 Lyman Drive in a building that once housed race car driver Bobby Rahal’s auto workshop, the tech incubator is part of Hilliard City Lab, a new private-public partnership that provides small companies with access to infrastructure, expertise and funding opportunities for innovation.
